Founder & CEO of CureDuchenne
Receiving the diagnosis for Duchenne was the scariest time of my life and I know all about the emotions you are feeling. Equipping yourself with the knowledge you need to get the best care for your child is the best thing you can do. Connecting with other families who are going through the same thing can be incredibly helpful as well.
Once I had the confidence that I was going down the right path of care for my son, I founded the nonprofit CureDuchenne and dedicated my life to raising funds to find a cure and to helping other families navigate care and clinical trials. Consider all of us at CureDuchenne as your team that is striving to make the future better for your child.
This special section of our website was created to address the unique needs of newly diagnosed families. Learning someone you love has been diagnosed with Duchenne is an emotional experience and trying to understand all the new information can be overwhelming. However, important decisions are made soon after diagnosis. We aim to provide the information and resources necessary to help families make decisions that contribute to obtaining the best care possible from the very beginning.
CureDuchenne is a resource you can rely on. We have parents on staff who have children living with Duchenne, a team with years of experience working with families affected by Duchenne, the top medical and scientific advisors, and a vast network of families working together to support each other. Please reach out to us if you need assistance or have any questions. We can help. We want to help. It's the reason we exist.
A positive screen of Duchenne muscular dystrophy leads to a time of uncertainty that is very difficult for any family to endure. A positive newborn screen does not necessarily mean that a baby has Duchenne, but it does indicate that further testing should be performed as soon as possible. If you have received a positive newborn screen result, or initial testing shows the possibility of a Duchenne diagnosis, reaching out to your doctor to determine the best pathway to a confirmed diagnosis as soon as possible is very important. Most times, symptoms for Duchenne do not appear until a child is 3-5 years old. Knowing that Duchenne may impact your family before symptoms appear means that you can learn and prepare to best help your child.
With early diagnosis, you can begin treatment as soon as clinically appropriate that may help preserve muscle strength and slow progression of weakness and loss of function. We are very encouraged with the pace of research, clinical trials and medical advancement for Duchenne. For children identified and diagnosed today, there is reason for hope, and early diagnosis may allow earlier intervention with effective treatments. CureDuchenne is here for you. We want to help you understanding the disease, connect to our community and provide you with resources to support your pursuit of a diagnosis, appropriate care and treatment for Duchenne.
CureDuchenne 1:1 provides meetings with our scientists, physical therapists, Duchenne parents, fundraising team and family support resource coordinators.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common form of muscular dystrophy, occurring in approximately 1:5,000 male births. It's a genetic disease caused by a mutation in the gene needed to make the protein dystrophin. Genes contain smaller sections known as introns and exons. There are several types of mutations, but deletions (72%) and duplications (7%) of one or more of the 79 exons within the DMD gene are most common among people diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dystrophin is a protein that stabilizes and protects muscle during use. Without a sufficient amount of dystrophin, muscle cells throughout the entire body become damaged and replaced by scar tissue. Over time, the damage is recognized as muscle weakness as it begins limiting function.
In 2010, Duchenne muscular dystrophy experts from around the world, published a paper containing their agreed upon recommendations for care based on evidence from research and clinical experience. Their recommendations, commonly referred to as the "care considerations," address the whole disease including respiratory and cardiac care, diagnostics, orthopedics, rehabilitation, gastrointestinal and nutritional issues, psychosocial interventions and oral care.
The care considerations are intended to raise standards of care, help clinicians provide optimal treatment, and empower families and caregivers by giving them the information necessary to understand appropriate care and a reference to use when they need to advocate to obtain it.
All three parts of the most recent care considerations, published in 2018, are available to access for free using the following links:

Comprehensive care from an experienced health care team is essential to manage the unique needs of an individual living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Disease progression, including impact on function, will determine which specialists need to be involved on the team and when they'll initiate specialized care.
Neurologists generally lead health care teams treating individuals with Duchenne. However, the experience each neurologist has in treating Duchenne is widely variable, so we believe it's imperative to seek care from a neurologist with a well-documented history of providing exceptional care for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Other families in the Duchenne community can be a great resource for recommendations. Suggested items to consider include: his/her ability to answer questions, clarity of instructions provided to manage care, amount of time spent with the patient/family, and overall physician reputation within the healthcare field.

Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with specialized education and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. As a member of a healthcare team caring for a child recently diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, genetic counselors are an excellent resource to help families understand the implications of their genetic test results, provide supportive counseling, and serve as patient advocates.
Consistent and frequent physical therapy (PT) is one of the few treatments currently available that's been proven to provide benefit at all ages with a potential to delay disease progression. Duchenne muscular dystrophy requires physical therapists to adopt a completely different approach to care. Because Duchenne is a rare disease, most physical therapists are unfamiliar with the unique treatment needs. Ensuring the physical therapist you work with is well-aware of the special concerns that need to be addressed with Duchenne and able to provide the specific care necessary is crucial.
Our CureDuchenne Cares Certified Physical Therapist program can help you identify a physical therapist with proven knowledge and experience with Duchenne patients.
Can't find a certified Duchenne Physical Therapist in your area? CureDuchenne created the first Duchenne-specific Physical Therapy program and continuing education course for licensed Physical Therapists. We offer training and certification at our CureDuchenne Cares Workshops for PT's in your area interested in expanding their services to help you and other patients with Duchenne.
The CureDuchenne Certified Physical Therapists® who have met the standards to maintain Certification are listed below.
*The CureDuchenne Certified Occupational Therapist program is available here: https://cureduchenne.org/occupational-therapy/

Founder & CEO of CureDuchenne
Receiving the diagnosis for Duchenne was the scariest time of my life and I know all about the emotions you are feeling. Equipping yourself with the knowledge you need to get the best care for your child is the best thing you can do. Connecting with other families going through the same thing can also be incredibly helpful.
Schedule a call with our experts HERE.
It’s the reason we exist.
CureDuchenne Cares is an interactive education and outreach program designed to provide the community with information, resources, and best practices for managing the challenges of Duchenne to help improve overall quality of life.
We host free family and caregiver workshops across the country to engage the community in hands-on, interactive education presented by expert Duchenne clinicians and researchers.
