Sending you off into the FUTURE: Highlights from FUTURES final day

The last day of FUTURES 2023 was jam-packed with sessions focused on how people with Duchenne can use their lived experience to help others going through the same challenges. A Game of Life encouraged people to share tips and tricks that work for them, breakout sessions met people wherever they were at in their Duchenne journey, and the closing session was an opportunity for everyone to share what was on their mind.

Don’t forget about the girls

The first session Sunday covered some of the important people who are often left out of the conversations ­­— moms that are Duchenne carriers. In this session three moms talked about their experience as carriers joined by cardiologist Pradeep P.A. Mammen, MD, to discuss some of the heart-related issues carriers face.

Where are you from?

Sunday’s brunch had a bit of a twist. Families sat, chatted, and ate amongst FUTURES attendees that also live in their geographic region. It was an opportunity to make connections with people who live nearby and understand each other.

The Game of Life: Can Do Duchenne Edition

Community Engagement Coordinator Leslie Porter and Sheryl Marrazzo walked attendees through a game like Life, but focused on inclusive activities, tips for everyday life, and audience interaction. And yes, there were prizes, including Legos, tickets and Echo Dots.

Overcoming obstacles is the way

In this session, Hawken Miller, CureDuchenne content strategist, parents Barry and Luci Nilson, and CureDuchenne physical therapist Doug Levine, discuss how they’ve overcome the many challenges that Duchenne brings in their lives.
